Our regional government is making it absurdly difficult and expensive to do anything. Here’s another example. I was approached by someone who wanted to build a roof over their lakeside house deck. Getting a building permit seems like a reasonable requirement as this is a public safety issue. The problem is that the deck is within 100 m of the lake and with the house and paved driveways, the 450 m2 hard surface area trigger is hit and a $4000 groundwater hydrology report is needed for the development permit. If that isn’t enough, the deck is also within 30 m of the lake triggering the need for a $2500 riparian assessment for that development permit. The owners are not proceeding and a local contractor loses a job.
