Summer in the Shuswap, cont'd
My last article seemed to touch a nerve with respect to fast boats. I want to reinforce the fact that the opinions I expressed are personal ones and as I heard clearly, they are not shared by all North Shuswap residents. I heard from people who were concerned about excessive carbon use and the effects on climate change, excessive noise, and safety.
I think the onus is on the owners of fast boats to self-police themselves or people will try to regulate them.
Recent articles in the Salmon Arm Observer about fast boats do contain some misinformation. Fast boats are not banned in Okanagan Lake but the Regional District of Central Okanagan has introduced a noise bylaw for boats. The only posted speed limit in Shuswap Lake is the channel in Sicamous at 5 knots. The Canada Shipping At also has a maximum speed limit of 10 Kmh when operating within 30 m of shore.
